Ruben Östlund Eyes Third Palme d’Or: Inside Look at His Quest in New Documentary

Documentary Feature About Ruben Östlund And His Quest For A Third Palme d’Or In The Works

Exploring the Ambition of Ruben Östlund Through Sigge Eklund’s Lens

Sigge Eklund, a Swedish author and filmmaker, has taken on the role of director for the documentary titled Ruben. This film delves into the creative process of Ruben Östlund during the production of his latest cinematic endeavor, The Entertainment System Is Down.

Currently in the stages of post-production, The Entertainment System Is Down was filmed over several years and is poised to be a contender at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Eklund’s documentary reveals that this new film is driven by Östlund’s grand ambition to be the first ever director to secure three Palme d’Or awards at Cannes.

The Genesis and Challenges of Östlund’s Latest Project

The documentary starts its narrative in 2022, shortly after the debut of Östlund’s film Triangle of Sadness. At this time, Östlund was already exploring ideas for his next big project, driven by a desire to surpass his previous works in scale and impact. The central question he faced was what the new film’s subject should be and the lengths he was prepared to go to realize his vision.

A breakthrough idea soon takes shape: a narrative set entirely on a long-haul flight that is thrown into disarray when the onboard entertainment system fails. To bring this concept to life, a large airplane set is constructed within a vast hangar in Budapest. This setting becomes the stage for a complex production that tests the limits of the crew’s technical, financial, and emotional capacities.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Endeavors

Produced by Stockholm Syndrome and Tiisch Film, in collaboration with SVT and Film I Väst, with SF Studios serving as the distributor, Ruben was officially unveiled at Film i Väst’s annual press conference in Cannes. Film i Väst is also co-producing two main competition features at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Fjord by Christian Mungiu and Gentle Monster by Marie Kreutzer.
