EXCLUSIVE: The Witch Farm, the popular supernatural podcast by Danny Robins, is set to be turned into a drama series by the BBC.
The UK’s national broadcaster has announced a four-episode series adaptation, produced by The Forsytes producer Mammoth Screen. Gabrielle Creevy, known from Black Doves, and Michael Socha from Showtrial, are set to star in the leading roles.
Danny Robins, who also created the chart-topping podcast series Uncanny for BBC Sounds last year, is the writer behind the series. He has experience in theatrical productions, having created the West End play 2:22 – A Ghost Story.
Here’s the premise of The Witch Farm: Set in 1989 in South Wales, Bill and Liz Rich relocate from London to Heol Fanog, a secluded modern farmhouse in the Brecon Beacons, hoping for a new beginning. Initially, their isolation seems liberating. However, during a distressing home birth, Liz is terrified by a ghostly apparition in their bedroom, marking the beginning of their nightmare.
The couple experiences a series of inexplicable events and a haunting sensation of being watched. As they delve into the history of their new home, they uncover dark secrets that challenge their marriage and their very beliefs, pushing them to the brink of what they can endure and deny for the sake of survival.
Inspired by actual events, accounts, and theories, The Witch Farm will adapt and modify some elements for enhanced dramatic effect. Production is scheduled to commence shortly.
Robins expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Prepare for a supernatural thriller that unfolds like a dark and compelling detective story—an emotional journey that will keep you engaged, touched, and thoroughly chilled. I’m eager to scare you.”
Lindsay Salt, BBC’s director of drama, commented, “Introducing BBC drama audiences to Danny’s widely appreciated podcast world is thrilling. With Gabrielle and Michael at the helm, viewers are in for a treat. Whether you’re familiar with Danny’s previous works or new to The Witch Farm, expect some genuine frights.”
The Witch Farm is penned and created by Robins, directed by Stacey Gregg of Bad Sisters fame, and produced by Megan Ott. The executive production team includes Simon Barnard, Gregg, and Robins; James Gandhi and Damien Timmer representing Mammoth Screen; and Nawfal Faizullah and Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC.
Rebecca Keane, Mammoth’s creative director, has managed the development of the series. It has received additional financing from the Welsh Government through Creative Wales and will be produced in collaboration with, and distributed internationally by, ITV Studios.
The original podcast that inspired the series was a collaborative effort by Bafflegab and Uncanny Media for BBC Radio 4, featuring Joseph Fiennes and Alexandra Roach.
