Karlovy Vary Film Festival Announces Honorees and Additions to Its Lineup

The Karlovy Vary Film Festival, scheduled to take place from July 5 to July 12, has revealed the list of distinguished actors and filmmakers who will be honored at this year’s event.

Renowned actor Stellan Skarsgård is set to receive the Crystal Globe award for his exceptional contributions to global cinema. During the festival, Skarsgård will present his new film, Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier. This is not Skarsgård’s first appearance at the festival; he attended back in 2002 to showcase Taking Sides, a film by István Szabó.

Vicky Krieps is another celebrated talent who will be honored with the President’s Award at the festival. Krieps will also introduce her latest project, Love Me Tender, directed by Anna Cazenave Cambet, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Dakota Johnson will be receiving a President’s Award as well and will use the occasion to screen her new summer romantic comedy, The Materialists, directed by Celine Song. Additionally, Peter Sarsgaard will accept a President’s Award and will present his critically acclaimed 2003 film, Shattered Glass, which delves into the world of journalism drama.

Today, the festival announced an expansion of its competitive film selection, bringing the total to twelve films. Among the new additions is the Iranian movie Bidad, directed by Soheil Beiraghi. The inclusion of Bidad was initially kept confidential to safeguard the safety of its crew who will attend the festival. The film portrays a young Iranian singer named Seti who boldly challenges the bans on public performances by women in Iran by singing openly in the streets. Her defiance resonates widely, turning her into a symbol of rebellion and hope for many young Iranians eager for change.
