Caution: Spoilers for Zootopia 2 are included in this discussion.Although it’s crafted for a family audience, Zootopia 2 was initially set to feature a lengthy tribute, lasting four minutes, to The Silence of the Lambs. This sequel, rich in hidden references, includes a nod to Pixar’s Ratatouille when a lion chef’s hat falls off, unveiling a rat as the real culinary master.
In an interview with Variety, Jared Bush, one of the film’s co-directors, explained that the movie also pays homage to The Silence of the Lambs through the character of Mayor Bellwether, who mirrors Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.
Bush shared that the original scene mirrored the exact dialogue between Lecter and Clarice Starling from their first encounter in the 1991 classic horror movie. Initially, the scene extended for four minutes, but Bush felt it was too much and could potentially disengage the younger audience. Below are Bush’s thoughts:
“That scene used to be four minutes long. We repeated word for word the initial meeting between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice, right down to the guard’s instructions, ‘All the way down the left, stay to the right.’
But we realized this might alienate our younger viewers.”
Eventually, the film opts for a subtler approach to the Silence of the Lambs reference. In a twist differing from Lecter’s elaborate escape, Bellwether is inadvertently freed by Nick Wilde, who accidentally releases all the inmates. However, she is recaptured by Nick and Judy Hopps in a post-credits scene of Zootopia 2.
Another iconic horror film, The Shining, is more overtly referenced in the sequel. According to Bush and Byron Howard, another co-director, the Lynxley mansion and its vast maze are tributes to the Overlook Hotel and its famed hedge maze, including a depiction of “unhinged Pawbert as Jack Nicholson.”
Zootopia 2 has garnered impressive ratings with a 91% critical score and 95% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes. Molly Freeman from ScreenRant commends the movie as “a tightly woven mystery filled with emotional and humorous elements that captivate viewers of all ages.”
Had the full four-minute homage to The Silence of the Lambs been retained, it might have alienated some of the younger viewers, despite likely being appreciated by adults familiar with the reference. However, removing it was probably wise as it was not crucial to the film’s narrative.
Maintaining a delicate balance to appeal to viewers across all age groups is crucial for the success of Disney’s animated features. With the overwhelmingly positive reviews and a strong box office showing on its opening weekend, it appears Disney has successfully found that balance once more with Zootopia 2.
