Revival of Classic TV Dramas: Copper and Cedar Cove Find New Audiences
The timeless appeal of the TV dramas Copper and Cedar Cove continues as both series secure new broadcasting platforms, ensuring they reach more viewers.
The UKTV network has successfully acquired the rights to the show Copper for its streaming platform, U. This series, set during the gritty 1860s era of New York City, was a creation of the talented trio Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana, and Will Rokos. Originally aired on BBC America, the show gained a significant audience by portraying the harsh realities of its time. It centers around Kevin Corcoran, a formidable police detective portrayed by Tom Weston-Jones, who comes back from the war only to discover his wife has disappeared and his daughter has tragically died. Corcoran dedicates himself to solving criminal cases while simultaneously unraveling the mysteries surrounding his family.
Although Copper was BBC America’s inaugural original drama series, ending after two seasons and a total of 23 episodes, it sparked discussions of a potential movie continuation. However, this project did not come to fruition. The series was produced by Cineflix and Shaw.
On another front, Cedar Cove, featuring Andie MacDowell, has recently surpassed 400,000 views on YouTube in German-speaking regions. The series has also expanded its reach into Central and Eastern Europe, with Hungary’s commercial network TV2 acquiring the broadcast rights. The series, which draws its storyline from Debbie Macomber’s best-selling novels, was originally produced by Unity Pictures for the Hallmark Channel in the U.S.
Germany-based Beta, responsible for the international sales of both Copper and Cedar Cove, announced the completion of these deals. Furthermore, they have secured several other agreements across Europe for their drama catalog.
In related news, the German crime TV movie series Big Ben has found a new home with the free-to-air broadcaster Prima TV in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Additionally, the enduring series The Call of the Mountain, which depicts the life of an alpine doctor, has been picked up by JOJ for Slovakian audiences and by the AXN White channel, enhancing its availability on pay TV in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
These strategic acquisitions and continued interest in classic series underscore the lasting value and appeal of well-crafted dramas in the global television landscape.
