The highly anticipated film Masters of the Universe hasn’t hit cinemas yet, but the director is already thinking ahead to what a sequel might entail.
In a recent group interview with ScreenRant, director Travis Knight shared his visions for a sequel to Masters of the Universe, contingent on its success at the box office and subsequent approval from Amazon MGM Studios. He expressed a particular interest in delving further into the backstory and development of the character Adam Glenn, who makes his debut in the initial movie.
“I’m curious about the future for Adam,” Knight remarked. “Now that he has become He-Man, what new challenges will he face? What does this transformation mean for him?” Knight emphasized that character relationships are fundamental to the narrative, and he is keen to explore “how these dynamics evolve in the future” should he be given the chance to direct another installment of Masters of the Universe.
However, Knight acknowledged that the possibility of a sequel is not assured, as it ultimately depends on the reception and financial success driven by the audience. He expressed a desire to continue working within this storied franchise but conceded, “if the audience isn’t interested, then these stories will not be told.”
“Looking ahead, there’s always a vision for more. There are elements and characters I wanted to include in this film that we couldn’t fit, aspects of certain characters I’d love to expand upon. I think about the next steps for Adam. Now that he’s fully He-Man, what does that mean? At its core, it’s about the relationships. That’s always my focus. How will these relationships progress? Ultimately, the decision isn’t ours to make. As much as we’d like to continue these stories, if there isn’t a demand, they won’t be told. But if there’s an appetite for more, we’d be thrilled to expand this universe.”
Prior to contemplating a sequel, Knight is focused on the imminent release of the first film, scheduled for early June. From the onset, he approached this project as a potentially singular opportunity to make a Masters of the Universe film, aiming to deliver the best possible version.
“We invested our all into this project, and I am immensely proud of the result,” Knight confessed. He praised the film for its “profound emotional depth” and “heartfelt narrative,” which he was thrilled to bring to the big screen.
“I always approach projects as if they’re my only chance. If this turns out to be the only film, then we’ve given it our all, and I’m profoundly proud of it. I find it fun, thrilling, and heartfelt. It conveys a deep emotional story, and I’m proud of everyone involved—the crew’s exceptional efforts and the actors’ passionate performances. I’m just really proud of the work we’ve done and what we’ve achieved.”
Masters of the Universe is part of a beloved franchise that originated in the 1980s, expanding into comics, TV series, films, video games, and action figures. The plot revolves around Adam Glenn (also known as He-Man), Teela, and Man-at-Arms as they strive to save Eternia from the tyrannical Skeletor.
The original Masters of the Universe film debuted in 1985 as an animated movie titled The Secret of the Sword, which pieced together several episodes from the She-Ra: Princess of Power series. This was followed by a 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, which unfortunately did not perform well at the box office, grossing only $17 million and receiving a dismal 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After years of development, a reboot by Amazon MGM Studios, featuring a star-studded cast including Nicholas Galitzine, Jared Leto, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, James Purefoy, Alison Brie, Kristen Wiig, and Sasheer Zamata, is set to premiere. Masters of the Universe is scheduled for theatrical release on Friday, June 5, 2026.
